How We Calculate Your Junk Car Offer

Every offer from RidOfMyCar.com is built on four factors: vehicle weight, current scrap metal prices, parts demand for your specific make and model, and condition adjustments. This page explains each factor transparently so you understand exactly how your number is calculated.

Factor 1: Vehicle Weight and Scrap Metal Price

The foundation of every junk car offer is the vehicle's curb weight multiplied by the current scrap steel price per pound. This is the minimum a vehicle is worth as recycled metal — regardless of condition. The scrap steel price fluctuates based on commodity markets and typically ranges between $0.05 and $0.09 per pound in Georgia.

Base Offer = Vehicle Weight (lbs) × Scrap Price Per Pound

Example: 3,500 lb sedan × $0.07/lb = $245 base scrap value

Vehicle TypeTypical WeightScrap Base Range
Compact sedan (Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla)2,600–3,000 lbs$130–$210
Mid-size sedan (Camry, Accord, Altima)3,100–3,700 lbs$155–$260
Full-size sedan (Charger, 300, Avalon)3,800–4,200 lbs$190–$295
Compact SUV (RAV4, CR-V, Equinox)3,200–3,800 lbs$160–$267
Mid-size SUV (Highlander, Explorer, Traverse)4,000–4,600 lbs$200–$322
Full-size SUV (Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition)5,200–6,400 lbs$260–$448
Half-ton pickup (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500)4,100–5,200 lbs$205–$364
3/4 and 1-ton pickup (F-250, Ram 2500)5,500–7,000 lbs$275–$490
Minivan (Odyssey, Sienna, Caravan)3,800–4,500 lbs$190–$315

Scrap ranges calculated at $0.05–$0.07/lb. Actual rate varies with commodity markets. Ranges updated June 2025.

Factor 2: Parts Value and Demand

Beyond scrap weight, specific components add meaningful value. The catalytic converter is the most impactful single component — it contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium recovered by recyclers. Engine assemblies, transmissions, and AWD components are assessed based on demand from independent repair shops and rebuilders.

Component / FactorOffer Adjustment
Intact catalytic converter (standard)+$50–$200
Intact catalytic converter (diesel or hybrid)+$200–$600
Missing catalytic converter$0 — base weight only
Functional engine (documented running)+$50–$400 depending on make/model
Major engine damage (blown, seized, hydrolocked)~base weight; engine has scrap value
Functional transmission+$50–$300 depending on type (CVT, ZF, 10-speed)
Rare or high-demand drivetrain components+$100–$500 (e.g., Jeep transfer case, BMW M engine)
Missing wheels or tires (all four)-$50–$150
Fire damage (extensive interior/wiring)-$100–$200

Factor 3: Condition Assessment

Vehicle condition affects which components can be valued as parts versus scrap metal. The table below summarizes how different conditions impact the final offer. No condition makes a vehicle worthless — the scrap weight provides a floor value regardless of damage.

ConditionOffer Impact
Running and drivingFull scrap base + parts premium for functional engine and drivetrain
Starts but does not driveFull scrap base + partial parts credit
Does not start, no major mechanical damageFull scrap base + standard parts credit
Blown engineScrap base + parts credit excluding engine assembly
Major collision damageScrap base; undamaged parts assessed individually
Flood damage (water intrusion)Scrap base; functional electronics and engine assessed
Fire damageScrap base at reduced rate; undamaged components assessed
Long-term storage (5+ years non-running)Scrap base; corrosion and tire condition assessed

Factor 4: Title and Ownership Status

Title status affects the administrative complexity of the transaction but has minimal impact on the offer amount. A clean Georgia title is ideal. A salvage or rebuilt title does not reduce the offer. No title (bill of sale) is accepted for qualifying vehicles under Georgia law — this may reduce the offer slightly on some higher-value vehicles to account for additional paperwork risk.

Clean title: Preferred. No offer adjustment.
Salvage title: Accepted. No offer adjustment.
Rebuilt/reconstructed title: Accepted. No offer adjustment.
No title (bill of sale): Accepted for vehicles 12+ years old per O.C.G.A. § 40-3-4. Minor adjustment on some higher-value vehicles.
Lost title (duplicate pending): Accepted. Can proceed with duplicate or notarized affidavit.

For full title and ownership details, see our Title and Ownership Policy.

Methodology Notes and Limitations

Scrap price variability: Commodity prices change weekly. The ranges above reflect typical Georgia scrap prices in 2025. Actual offers may differ if steel prices move significantly.

Parts demand variability: Parts adjustments reflect average Georgia market demand. Rare models or vehicles in exceptionally high demand may earn outside these ranges.

Weight data source: Vehicle weights are sourced from manufacturer specifications. Actual curb weights vary by trim, options, and model year.

No remote assessment for all components: Some component values (specific interior electronics, body panels, glass) are assessed in person at pickup. Quotes may be adjusted at pickup only if the vehicle description differs materially from what was stated at the time of the quote — not as a routine negotiating tactic.

Geographic scope: All pricing applies to Georgia pickups only. Out-of-state logistics affect offers.
